Quick Tips For Searching
- Basic Searching
- This search looks for matches in the descriptive metadata of each item. This is not a full-text search. Using more than one word will return more results, although each word will not necessarily appear in the same record. The default operator is 'OR'.
- Phrase Searching
- Placing quotes around a phrase will search for the exact phrase.
EXAMPLE: "natural history"
- Capitalisation
- Searches are not capitalisation sensitive.
EXAMPLE: Searching for NATURAL will return the same results as searching for natural
- Diacritics
- To search for words with diacritics (fadas), the character must be entered into the search box.
EXAMPLE: Searching Máire Bean Uí Urdáil is a different search than Maire Bean Ui Urdail.
Diacritics can be formed using the following key combinations on most keyboards:
á AltGr + a
é AltGr + e
í AltGr + i
ó AltGr + o
ú AltGr + u
- Wildcards
- The wildcard indicators '*' and '?' can be used to match 0 or more characters or a single character respectively.
EXAMPLE: Searching for child* will return child, child's and children.
Searching for Fra?er will return Fraser and Frazer.
